October 10th was World Mental Health Day. It was created to raise awareness about mental health issues around the world and encourage more support in this area.
October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I have had a few friends who have battled this horrific thing. They are heroes – not just for fighting cancer, but also because they are awesome women.
Awareness campaigns can be important reminders to tend to our health, yet these aspects of our health are so important all the time.
Don’t Wait to Schedule Your Health Check-Ups!
With so many people suffering from mental health challenges, it sometimes feels trivial to discuss some of the topics of mental wellness typically highlighted on World Mental Health Day, or to focus on this year’s suggested topic of mental health at work.
And the pink breast cancer marketing campaigns are cute, and get attention, but pink-washing things doesn’t do the experience of breast cancer justice. I’m happy it brings awareness and hopefully more access to those who need breast exams and treatment, but cancer is not glamorous.
I’m sharing this to remind you that it’s okay to schedule a check-up any time of the year – especially if you feel something isn’t quite right. We may not be able to eliminate all risks, but we can take steps to be healthier by staying proactive.
Proactive, Preventive Health Care Appointments Save Lives
I don’t typically have mammograms in October. I get them anytime of the year when I am getting my check-up, or if I suspect something is not right, or if I find a lump in a self-exam. Earlier this year, I had my mammogram as part of my regular check-up.
This month, I went in for a colonoscopy, which was long overdue due to my personal and family history. While I’m still waiting for the final results, my doctor said everything looks good. A couple of polyps were removed, but they’re hopefully nothing to worry about.
At the height of my colon issues, I was really unwell. All I wanted was to reclaim my health and my life. With the support of my medical team and a laser focus on my diet, I eventually put it into remission.
The news might not have been so positive had I waited. There’s a lot to be said for proactive, preventive care.
Your Friendly Reminder to Take Healthy Action Today
Even though we are currently in Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mental Health Month, why not take a moment today to book the check-ups and health and wellness appointments that you’ve been putting off?
Many health issues can sometimes be prevented by being mindful of your family’s history, eating well, living a healthy lifestyle, and staying on top of check-ups.

While we can’t avoid all risks, we can certainly catch some problems early and navigate them.
I hope that whatever you are doing this month, you take some time out for your mental health. My big thing I did on World Mental Health Day to support my mental health was to avoid the long lines of Dubai traffic to get home. Instead, I came to a beautiful spot where I enjoyed a pot of sage tea in a garden of trees.
