The coaching industry seems to be booming. If you have found my site, you have probably looked at many coach websites and you might have some questions….

Do I need a coach? Which coach is right for me? How do I choose one?

While I write a lot from the heart, and use a feelings-based approach in how I coach, I’m going to get really factual for a few minutes. I hope this post will shed some light on a few of the questions that you might be having.

What exactly is coaching? A coach’s expertise lies with helping people achieve a higher level of well-being in life, or a specific area of life. Coaching is goal oriented. When I coach someone, I embark on a journey with them as they progress toward achieving their goals.

Coaches are not going to tell you what to do. We may be experts in certain subjects, but we should not be telling you how to achieve your goals. Now there may be times I take off my coach hat and suggest a resource to support your goals, but when I do this, it is not coaching.

Coaching is not mentoring. I may have had had similar experiences to you, or not, but my role as a coach is not to say “This is how I did it” or “This is how you should do it”. As much as I sometimes would like to do a brain dump of everything I have learned in a certain situation, if I do that, I’m not coaching. My job is to listen and then help you get really clear on how you would like to do it.

Coaching is also not therapy. And if you are at a phase in life where you need therapy, by all means do not replace that with coaching. If things are coming up in coaching sessions that need to be addressed with a psychologist or psychiatrist, then your coach should refer you to someone.

I could go on, but by now you are probably asking, if a coach does not do those things, then what is a coach? What can a coach do for me?

What can a coach do for you?

A coach will help you grow. They help you get clarity. They help you take all those big ideas in your head and create a vision and support you as you take action. They help you explore how to do that. They hold you accountable.

I am a certified Wellness & Lifestyle Medicine coach. I am also licensed to work in the feelings based approach Desire Map and Fire Starter methodologies. I use many tools and methodologies in my coaching practice, but there are a few things that you can always be sure of. I promise to always:

  • Accept you where you are – there is no judgment here
  • Support you as you take charge
  • Guide you in mindful thinking and doing the work that builds your confidence
  • Help you define your personal vision of wellness for yourself
  • Help you tap into your inner wisdom and traits that will help you achieve your goals
  • Support you as you bring your mental and physical health together
  • Support you to overcome things that might be holding you back from taking action
  • Inspire and challenge you to go beyond what you think your limits are

Coaching is one of the most powerful ways to tap into your inner strengths. I’d love to help you find out what those are.
